7/7/2023 0 Comments Damping sphere utopia sprawl![]() ![]() This was my third time qualifying for this tournament and if you like older formats you should definitely try to play this new showcase format: It’s the best Magic Online has to offer and you can play whichever format you like the most to try to qualify.įor this year the formats of the finals were Vintage Cube Draft and Modern and I prepared a lot for both. The result wasn’t what I wanted but I always enjoy these tournaments and the formats were really cool and refreshing from mostly only playing standard for the year. It’s another good, flexible option for sideboards, but I don’t think it’s much more than that.Hey guys, Bernardo Santos here and today I’ll talk about my recent MOCS tournament. This card will see play, but it’s not demonstrably different from the kinds of cards decks have been answering for years. My main point here is to throw a wet blanket on the doomsayers and over-reactionaries who think this gives Jund the keys to the castle of tier-0 Modern supremacy, or that Tron and Storm are now dead, cremated, buried, and shat-upon. Spell Snare just counters this, obviously. It doesn’t do nothing, but you’d have to be replacing some serious maindeck chaff to justify bringing this in just for Snaps or Cascade Lady. I’m pretty sure if you’re boarding in Damping Sphere just for those cards, I’m going to thank you for time-walking yourself on turn 2. Many think this is an answer to Snapcaster Mage and Bloodbraid Elf.Damping Sphere certainly prevents the critical-mass from occurring, but doesn’t do anything else. Rest in Peace is more difficult to get rid of (being an enchantment) and can sometimes end up exiling graveyard cards Storm was counting on to go off. Not only does she prevent Storm’s combo turn, but she even makes it extremely hard to cast cantrips at all and find answers. For instance, a Thalia, Guardian o f Thraben can often just brick Storm if they’re short on lands. This card isn’t necessarily better than many of the other common (and similar) Storm answers. If you’re able to, you’re playing Blood Moon instead. Blood Moon shuts off man-lands, fetch-lands, often-times entire colors. Deck-building constraints aside, this card isn’t better than Blood Moon.Tron and Storm have been playing against cards like this for years, and there’s nothing about Damping Sphere that makes it any more difficult to answer it. To put a bow on the previous two points: it’s not unique concerning one’s ability to answer it.Just like Thalia, or Rest in Peace, or whatever, Storm can just bounce this and go off.Just like Blood Moon, Tron can kill this easily if it’s playing green (or red). What I don’t think is that this card is in danger of re-shaping the format, or burying the decks it obviously targets. It’s simply easier to play this card, as its effects are so narrow compared to their counterparts.įor the above reasons, I think this card will be used. Unlike Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, this card won’t inadvertently hose your spells and force you to build around it. Unlike Blood Moon, this card doesn’t force a deck to reshape its land-base to accommodate it. It’s important for Modern sideboard cards to be versatile, since you have 1,004 potential decks to prepare for. Even though both effects of this card are somewhat narrow, the end result is a card that targets two specific archetypes (Tron, Storm). Another less-mentioned point: Tron can sometimes have turns where it’s playing/cracking many Chromatic Stars and Spheres this card can mess with that as well.It allows someone to stop turn-3 Karn when Tron decks are on the play, which is an effect that isn’t terribly easy to achieve in Modern. So, what makes this card special and important? Time for a list: I don’t want to underestimate what’s important, but I also want to point out what is being overstated/over-hyped about this card. ![]() I want to start out with this: this is an important card. “Turn 3 Karn no more!” “This one weird trick will make Storm players cry!” “We always over-react to everything!” ![]() When this was spoiled, a whole lot of Modern players started screaming in unison. Let’s talk about Damping Sphere, one of the recently accidentally-spoiled cards from Dominaria. ![]()
